Castel San Pietro
Castel San Pietro in Verona: what to see and what to do
How picturesque is Castel San Pietro with its panoramic position at the top of the hill overlooking Verona!
History
Castel San Pietro stands on the hill of the same name (San Pietro Hill) in the area of Verona to the left of the Adige River.
Roman Era
The hill takes on a strong religious significance through the construction of a temple and a theater.
Middle Ages
A church dedicated to St. Peter, after whom the hill is named, is built on the remains of the ancient Roman temple. A phase of fortification followed, completed by Cangrande della Scala and Gian Galeazzo Visconti with the construction of imposing city walls that can still be seen today and cross the campsite.
Republic of Venice
La Serenissima maintains the castle and further fortifies the location.
Napoleonic Era
With the arrival of the armies, most of the buildings are destroyed.
Austrian intervention
The old church is destroyed and a barracks is built to house the Austrian soldiers. The style of the fortress changes the original appearance: the structure is distinctly military, although this element is toned down by the insertion of merlons that echo those of the Scaliger walls.
A walk on the walls
Today, Castel San Pietro is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Verona, because the square offers one of the most picturesque views of the city.
Our suggestion is to take a walk, to fully relish this journey through history: you can start from Ponte Pietra and, walking alongside the archaeological site of the Roman Theater, take the alley Scalone di Castel San Pietro that leads to the top of the hill.

Funicular
The funicular is equally picturesque, as it offers a splendid panoramic view of the city and allows you to reach the hill in a few minutes while filling your eyes with beauty.
